This paper discusses the characteristics of Heisei literature.
First, from the beginning of the bubble collapse, several economic novels were written about the events that occurred. This is because the information in economic novels was important at that time when it was necessary to understand the economy. It is also thought that it was easier for Japanese people to accept the form of a novel than explicit disclosures from reports as Japanese people are very loyal to organizations.
Second, novels that play the role of “healing” have become very popular in Japan. This paper pays special attention to Jiro Asada’s “Poppoya,” which states that “you have lived wonderfully,” leading to Japanese people healing through the novel. Additionally, the “disaster literature” published after “3 11” has included discussions on how to heal without experiencing a disaster directly.
Finally, Heisei literature also includes novels about youth problems. Particularly noteworthy is that youth’s problems are treated as social and institutional problems, not just for individuals. Additionally, the spread of the Internet and SNS is also essential in explaining the Heisei era.
