This paper proposes that the degree of similarity in terms of vowel identity contributes to the irregularity in Tagalog mid vowel alternation. Findings suggest that both faithfulness constraint (Ident-BR [V]) and markedness constraints (Uniform-V [high] & Uniform-V [round]) based on the Kaun’s (1995) Uniformity Hypothesis dictates this similarity based on various degree. Based on these constraints, an initial grammar was created using simulation phases adapted from Boersma and Hayes (2001), as well as distribution information from native speakers" observed judgment. Then, using the Exponential Noisy Harmonic Grammar (NHG) model, a weighted constraint grammar designed specifically to cope with constraints of negative weight (Pater, 2009), learning simulations were carried out. As a result, an output grammar was created, with a numerical weight assigned to each constraint. To assess the success of the analysis, predicted judgment was derived from the output grammar and compared to observed judgment. Finally, findings suggest that applying Exponential NHG to the study of linguistic variety is a promising field for future research.
