The aim of this study is to reexamine the velar plosive alternation in connection with the degree of lexicalization in Japanese. Regarding that the alternation is an inevitable consequence of phonetic motivation, we adopted the core principles of Optimality and Markedness Theory. It has been assumed that the lexical elements in Japanese are internally stratified based on the degree of lexicalization. That is, elements in the lexical core fulfill all lexical constraints, which leads to the [?]∼[ŋ] alternation, while those in periphery areas violate more universal constraints. Consequently, there are more items that violate constraints as we reach a periphery area. It also turned out that only faithfulness constraints can be reranked in the interaction of constraints.
