The curriculum currently used in high school is revised in 2015. This study examines illustrations and photographic materials in eight Japanese textbooks. In order to revive and reinvigorate Japanese language education, it is vital to use proper illustrations and photographic materials. The misuse and abuse of illustrative materials and the use of outdated photographic materials need to change.
1)Kimono aprons and Yukata straps are inaccurately depicted.
2)The location and/or size of characters and/or speech bubbles in the textbook are inappropriate.
3)Spoons and chopsticks are placed unnaturally.
4)Language expressions and illustrations are mismatched.
5)Doctors in reality seldom wear a suit and a stethoscope.
The above errors and inaccurate illustrations must be corrected and replaced immediately. The recommendations for the 2022 curriculum are as follows. New illustrations and photographic materials in the new curriculum should be required to be regularly monitored and updated, while the regulations on the curriculum should include clauses on the criteria for the use of illustrations and photographs.
