This study was purpose to observe the antioxidative effects of the ethanolic extracts of Atractylodes lancea(Al) in the kidney cytosol of streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The rats were randomly divided to control(NC), diabetic control(DC) and Al extract therapy diabetic groups(Al) which were respectively treated with Al at 1, 2, 3g b.w./day(Al-1, Al-2, Al-3) for 14 days. The levels of malondialdehyde(MDA) were increased in diabetic rats. The activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) were higher in Al-1 and Al-2 than DC. The catalase(CAT) did not show a difference, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) were higher in DC than NC. Compared to DC, the activities were decreased in Al-2. The activities of glutathione reductase(GR) were increased in DC but activities were decreased in all Als. The glutathione-S-transferase(GST) activities were higher in DC than in NC, and Al-3 was higher than DC. The xanthine oxidase(XOD) activities were increased in the diabetic rats, Al-2 is higher than DC. These results reveal the fact that the administration of Al extraction can reduce oxidative stress and protect the kidneys in diabetic rats.
