The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the efficacy of authentic video material in English classroom. Among many possible concerns, this paper centers on the practical issues in multimedia language teaching by i) presenting a classroom case utilizing the American TV drama series, The Newsroom, in a university-level conversational English course as a suggestive learning and teaching model; and ii) reporting on a questionnaire survey inquiring students’ self-perceived competence and interest in English conversation before and after the authentic video activities. The results of paired samples t-tests indicated that, contrary to the common expectation, students reported perceived backslides in the area of listening, speaking, vocabulary, and strategy; and slight improvements in grammar and pronunciation. Students’ responses to open-ended survey questions suggest that the quantitative results should be interpreted as self-reflective shrinking learners experience after being exposed to real language in context which was never intended for classrooms. This view is supported by the word counts of students’ answers to a hypothetical question. Pedagogical implications and limitations are also presented.
