Perceptions of six native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) are explored throughsemi-structured interviews with respect to English as a foreign language (EFL)curriculums at Korean universities. The participating NESTs reflect that generalEnglish education has not been as successful as it could have been due to the lackof assessment and/or utilization of the students’ proficiency prior to courseenrollment and at the end of its completion. In this regard, the participants putforth that effective level testing and placement of students can pave the way forefficacious language learning and teaching. Moreover, they are of the opinion thatappropriate implementation of exit criteria can facilitate and ensure thedevelopment of students’ language skills. They take the view that it is vital to takelearner proficiency into account at entry and exit in order to improve the overallquality of general English education. Insights yielded in this study can beinstrumental in curriculum review and renewal at tertiary institutions in Korea andelsewhere with a similar EFL context.
