The purpose of this article is to persue the history of education and the development process in the department of systematic theology especially in the Korea Presbyterian Church, from 1901 to 1980. In doing so, I particularly focused on not only its primal foundation and the development process through its successions but also its major theological characteristics in each period. It is very important to recognize clearly and precisely our own past history, in order to find out where we stand on now and where we have to go in the future. In this short study, however, we cannot search all over its very complicated history throughly as a whole, thus we cannot but deal with only its kernel points and the major theologians in the department of systematic theology. In addition to do this, I restricted my research scope to Pyengyang Theological Seminary, which was the first theological seminary in Korea, and its four major successive seminaries(Koshin, Chongshin, Jangshin, and Hanshin theological seminary). Futhermore, in its research methodology, I used a kind of ‘matrix method’. In that case,first of all, I diachronically persue the process of development in systematic theology and its theological characteristics each period. At the same time, I also try to analyze synchronically its major theologians and their works, the key theological issues, and its relations with the world theological situations. In doing so, we can more clearly found out their distinctive theological features, the important contributions as well as its limitations.

본 논문의 목적은 한국 장로교 최초의 신학교인 평양신학교의 설립(1901)부터 이후 1980년까지의 제 1, 2세대 걸친 한국장로교 조직신학의 교육과 연구의 발전 역사를 통하여, 그 착근과 계승 발전의 과정 및 각 시대마다 주요신학적 특징적 요소들을 살펴보는 것이다. 이러한 연구가 가지는 의의는 우리 스스로의 지나온 역사를 면밀하게 살펴봄으로써 오늘 우리가 서 있는 자리를 보다 명확히 알 수가 있다는 것이며, 또한 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향을가늠해 보기 위해서라도 너무나 중요하고 필요한 일이라 할 것이다. 그러나이 짧은 논고에서 그 복잡다난한 한국장로교 조직신학의 발전 역사를 전체적으로 일목요연하게 분석하여 모두 담아 정리하기란 대단히 어려운 일이다. 따라서 그러한 연구의 한계와 어려움을 충분히 감안하면서, 본 논문에서는 일종의 ‘매트릭스 방법’(Matrix methodology)을 사용하여 한국장로교 조직신학의 발전과 전개과정을 정리하고자 한다. 그리고 이 연구의 범위를 제한함에 있어, 먼저 일차적으로 한국장로교 신학의 근간이 된 ‘평양신학교’와그것을 직접 계승하였거나 분리되어 설립된 ‘4개의 주요 장로교단의 신학대학원’(고신/장신/총신/한신[가나다순])을 중심하여 연대기적으로 그 신학적특색에 따라 발전/전개과정을 정리하며, 동시에 각 시대별로 주요 조직신학자들과 저작들, 그리고 중요한 신학적 주제/이슈들과 이와 연관된 신학자들을 중심으로 살펴봄으로써 그 통시적(계통적)인 발전과정을 밝히고, 또한 공시적으로 세계교회의 신학적 발전 및 전체적인 한국교회의 신학의 주요 주제/이슈들과의 상호 연관관계를 살피며 추적 정리하고자 한다. 이렇게 함으로서 기대하는 바는, 한국장로교를 대표하는 각 교단신학의 계통적인 발전과정과 더불어 신학적 정체성과 특징들을 살피며, 또한 그것을 가능하게 한주요 신학자들의 신학적 공헌과 특징들을 보다 구체적으로 알 수 있게 될것이다. 즉, 본 논문을 통하여 우리는 “한국장로교 조직신학”이라는 전체적인 숲이 형성되어온 과정과 경관을 조망하면서, 동시에 그 숲을 이루는 각각의 지형적 특징과 그 속의 각종 나무들의 특색 있는 모습까지 가능한 입체적으로 살펴보고자 한다.
