Purpose Multiple surface electrodes must be attached to theskin for high-accuracy signal source position estimationinside the human body, and can be uncomfortable for thesubject. This paper presents a method for signal sourceposition estimation inside the human body to solve thisproblem. In our method, the human body is modeled as anelectrical circuit, consisting of an internal resistance and apotential source, which can both be measured simultaneouslyvia two surface electrodes using switching voltage dividertechnology. The purpose of this study is to reduce thenumber of electrodes required for human body signal sourcelocalization, and the estimation ability of the proposedmethod is confirmed here. Methods A single signal source consisting of positive andnegative poles was set inside a water tank filled with tapwater to simulate a human body, and a sine wave was generatedusing this signal source. Stainless steel measurement electrodeswere used to obtain the signal source potential and internalresistance. Equations representing the signal source positionwere developed using the information at each electrode, andsignal source position was estimated by solving simultaneousequations. Results Signal source position was estimated correctly withmaximum localization error of 2.6 mm. Conclusion Our method showed that the signal sourceposition inside a water tank filled with tap water can beestimated using internal resistance. This paper presentspreliminary study results towards our final goal of the signalsource position estimation inside a human heart using smallnumbers of electrodes.
