An automated system using machine learning methods, applied to abroad historical database, while avoiding survivorship bias, and for avariety of performance metrics, is developed and tested againstactual historical human performance, for drafts, free agency, andtrades, in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The resultingsystem is robust, comprehensive, realistic, and does not overfitinformation from the future. Backtested over 10 years in a partialequilibrium non-zero-sum setting where only one team can benefitfrom its recommendations, the automated general manager wouldhave outperformed the actual historical production of every singleteam, by substantial margins. From draft decisions alone, theaverage team lost about $130 million worth of on-court productivityrelative to what they could have had with the automated generalmanager in total over the decade; this shortfall represents a quarterof the average franchise value. Thus, the general management ofsports franchises may benefit substantially from automation.
