According to the 2017 World Giving Index report released by the Charities Aid Foundation in the UK, Myanmar has been ranked number one in donations since 2015. CAF analyzes that such a high contribution index in Myanmar is due to the donation practice of Theravada buddhism. However, such an analysis is superficial in two respects. First, the above analysis lacks an analysis of the cause of high donation index in the advanced western society including the United States. Second, it can not explain why the same results did not come out in societies such as Thailand and Laos which have the same buddhist tradition, and the overwhelming majority of the people are Buddhist. In understanding the causes of social phenomena such as donations, it is necessary to analyze socio-cultural and socio-economic conditions and context in which such practices are performed rather than focusing on specific cultural elements such as religion. This paper explores the various meanings of ahlu, a concept of religious donation in Myanmar, and tries to analyze kahtein, which most clearly reveals the communal characteristics among ahlu ceremonies. Through this analysis, this paper claims that ahlu, as a religious practice in the Myanmar society, functions as a mechanism to organize or reinforce social relations and therefore ahlu is a social practice whose qualitative attributes are different from the western concept of donation.
