Born in Guyana, Grace Nichols moved to England in her late twenties. As a diasporic writer, she wrote poems that express nostalgia for home, a main theme for Caribbean writers in Britain. In “Like a Beacon,” the speaker residing in London is often trapped by the memory of home. The desire for tropical food reflects her longing for home. “Island Man” depicts a man, who lives in London yet hears the illusionary sounds of home. Struggling between the two worlds of dream and reality, he cannot but return to daily lives in the end. In “To My Coral Bones,” the speaker is identified with the Caribbean. In “Hurricane Hits England,” the storm that struck England revives the speaker’s memory of home in the past. The awakening and subsequent restoring of self-identity is reflected in the shift from the third person to first person narrative. Through the deconstruction of storm, she is emancipated and declares self-identity. Nichols’s nostalgia illustrates the trend in which Caribbean female writers pursue and represent self-identity.
