Convergence between different genres and fields has been more and more articulated in contemporary society and culture. Likewise, relation between art and architecture has become more profound and organic. Ann Hamilton who is one of the leading artists and was the American representative in the 48th Venice Biennale has created innovative, meaningful installation art for 30 years. In terms of body and place relationship, there are many and rich aspects to refer to in architecture as well as interior design studies. This paper aims to examine the relationship between body and place found in the Hamilton's site-specific installation projects, and to reveal the multi-layered meaning that is hidden. Although Hamilton shows various project types and methods, this study focuses on her site-specific installation arts. It is found that there are two project categories in her spatial works: Works based on multi sensory phenomenological experience, Works based on kinematic body movements. Two case projects from each category have been analyzed in detail by applying 4 elements of body-place relationship: place, sense, movement, time. As a conclusion, the study deduced that there are multiple layers of meaning in the concept of 'body': one is the corporeality of a viewer in which experiences of phenomenon, perception and physical activities are inter-related, and the other is the corporeality of a place in which environment, context, atmosphere of a site become an integrated structure. Ultimately these two sides generate new dimension of bodyness. This sort of creative thoughts, methods, project results found in Hamilton’s art can widen the existing limitations of architectural thinking.
