This study explores what factors demotivate Korean high school students in their learning of English. It employed a questionnaire survey that investigated the students’ learner characteristics and their demotivating factors. The learner characteristics of the present study include the students’ recognition of their English language proficiency, their English learning achievement, their age of starting English language learning, and the degree of their parents’ support, and the demotivating factors are originated from Dӧrnyei’s (1998) framework, which identified nine sources of demotivation. The results of the study reveal that the compulsory nature of L2 study and lack of confidence is the most strong factors which affects the Korean high school students. The correlation analysis between the learner characteristics show that the learners’ confidence has a strong relationship with their interest in English and their recognition of English proficiency. Also the multiple regression analysis of the study reveals that the learners’ recognition of their English proficiency, with their English achievement, interest, confidence, parents’ support, strongly caused the students’ demotivation of learning English. The study presents pedagogical implications and some ways of reducing demotivating effects for teaching high school students in Korean English teaching classrooms.
