When discussing the teacher professionalism, in what aspect do we say the professionalism is necessary? It must be the teaching. That is, to teach well is the key element of teacher’s professionalism. The history teacher’s professionalism should also be found in the history lessons. Recently what is most noticed among the professionalism elements of history teacher to determine the professional teaching ability in the history education is the teacher’s knowledge. Schulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge theory which is focusing on the knowledge value of teacher helped us research the teacher’s knowledge in a new viewpoint. Furthermore, the new studies such as Ball & Hill’s ‘Content Knowledge for Teaching’, Elbaz’s ‘Practical Knowledge,’ and ‘Knowledge Quartet’ in England suggested helpful topics for the knowledge study of history teachers. In the field of history education study, there have been studies to find out its own substance of teacher’s knowledge. It has been discussed to elucidate the history teacher’s professionalism and/or to expand and apply Schulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge theory. Based on such research achievements, the future study tasks are suggested as follows: first, the study on the teacher’s knowledge is necessary which reflects the peculiar characteristics of history as well as Korean educational environment; second, the study on the teacher’s knowledge is necessary according to the characteristics of class and teaching subjects; finally, the study on the teacher’s knowledge is necessary concerning to teacher’s ideology and students’ understanding about history lessons. This study can have significance in that it can check the history teacher’s professionalism and it can give the idea to improve the professional teaching ability.
