The purpose of this paper is to analyze Herzog in Saul Bellow’s Herzog, focusing on Donald Winnicott 's concept of ‘Holding.’ Winnicott argues that infants develop through relationships with their mother as a first object in child care. The mother provides the necessary environment for the infant and plays a role in solving the tension and anxiety that the infant may have. So if the infant does not receive early enough good care, he experiences psychological anxiety, fear, and mental pathology. This examines whether Herzog is in a good enough holding environment. Herzog recalls what happened to him through his retrospection of the reality he was in. Although he was once a promising scholar and intellectual person, he failed to meet the object to promote his growth, and became mentally confused. The absence of enough holding of women around him hindered the growth to his true self. As a result, he remained helpless, unable to do anything but write letters that were not sent. The failure of holding made Herzog a helpless person by limiting the activity of his true self. However, Ramona allowed him maternal care. In other words, the special relationship with her that gives enough good holding made him an opportunity to express his true self. So he turns into a person who can quit writing letters that are a sign of psychological anxiety and can act actively. Ramona's holding shows the possibility for Herzog's self recovery.
