The purpose of this paper is to examine how the main character of this work, Herzog, regains a positive attitude toward a new life in personal pain and mental suffering in “Herzog” by Saul Bellow. Modern people who faced the shocks and fears of the Second World War, the development of science and technology, and the materialistic epochs should experience the problem of alienation and the loss of their identity. The problem of alienation and loss of identity, which had been limited to the problems of the Jews in the past, has now expanded into a common problem for all, and the Jews have the image of representing the problems of modern people. Herzog, the protagonist of this work, is facing a crisis with mental suffering due to the affair that Madeleine married for the second time and her divorce. He begins to write down memoirs that come to mind at every moment in this mental pain and confusion. Herzog was able to resolve the moment of mental suffering through this way, and to conclude his spiritual wandering and to restore his self-confidence. In conclusion, the essential force that Herzog used to overcome the emotional pain and crisis she faced was derived from the Jewish traditions she had experienced in childhood. Jewish tradition is a solidarity of family and community, affirmation of life, and acceptance of human dignity.
