The purpose of this research is to explore the speech act patterns present in voice-chat between EFL students and a chatbot. Sixty-three Korean college students taking an English speaking class participated in the present study with a language proficiency level considered as intermediate-low according to the results of the TOEIC speaking test. During the sixteen-week experimental period, they engaged in oral interaction with a chatbot for 10 minutes a week. Selected chat topics were mostly about describing daily lifestyles. For data analysis, the participants’ chat scripts were chosen at random and analyzed qualitatively. Results show that interaction with a chatbot allowed the participants to be consistently exposed to the different types of speech acts and encouraged them to learn and practice those speech acts in different situations. Given that EFL students often experience failure in speech acts due to the limited contact with native speakers, findings of the present study shed light on the use of chatbots in learning English speech acts.
