In 1960, Fukazawa Shichiro’s novel Furyū Mutan (“The Story of a Dream of Courtly Elegance”) was published in the magazine Chūōkōron. This satire violated the taboo on discussing or criticizing the Emperor through its carnivalesque depictions which used the imperial family’s real names, and thus provoked the “Furyū Mutan” incident. This paper analyzes the state of the imperial system in post-war Japan and Japanese sentiment regarding the “Furyū Mutan” incident, and then discusses the critique of the imperial system in Fukazawa Shichiro’ works. First, the novel became controversial in literary circles, and the tensions between intellectuals and the imperial system were exposed. Then, in 1961 the Shimanaka incident occurred, with the modern imperial system being the root cause. Between Japan’s defeat in WWII and the 1960s, the emperor completed the change from being seen as divine to being seen as human, but the emperor’s status in the hierarchy of power has not changed, and the Japanese are still sweetly disposed towards him. Fukazawa Shichiro’s text, implicitly and explicitly, harshly criticizes the deceptions of the imperial system, which also puts it in an ironic light in Japanese society.
