Although the number of traditional Korean folktale collections published in and by Japanese during the Japanese colonial period is innumerable, more in-depth discussions on Korean folktales written in Japanese are still not taking place in earnest. As these Korean folktales were selected by Japanese editors under certain purposes, there would be a lot of alterations including distortion and reduction caused by misunderstanding and misconception of Joseon culture. This paper aims to compare 「Kongjwi and Patjwi」 by Tanaka Umekichi with older versions of the story focusing on variations such as deletions, reductions, and changes which were revealed in the process of rewriting. As a result, the 'marriage story' and 'post-marriage story' in the text of Tanaka, which are the specific characteristics of 「Kongjwi and Patjwi」, were deleted. This links to a new version of Kongjwi, the heroine of the story, who has no choice but to seek help from a surreal being while weeping helplessly. It has a great significance in that the original Kongjwi is invincible in spite of any kind of adversities and copes with them wisely. Throughout this paper, I hope that this study could provide cues for the advanced research on the collection of Joseon folktale written in Japanese in the future.
