The Unité d’habitation tends to be recognized and studied as a modern co-residential building type, rather than as an urban plan. In fact, it was not just a building but un urban plan project that compressively inherited the Radiant City. This city presented a modern residential environment based on revolutionary changes in the sunshine environment. Consequently, the unique architectural characteristics of the Unité d’habitation must be re-analyzed in relation to the creation of the modern sunshine environment. The characteristics of the Unité d’habitation can be summarized as follows: 1) a high-rise flat-type building with a long axis in the north-south direction; 2) pilotis and a roof garden; 3) a central corridor following the long axis of the building; 4) a duplex-type elongated residential unit with a narrow elevation width of 4,19 m, with an east-west double orientation; and 5) a loggia brise-soleil. These features were part of the methodology developed to create the modern sunshine environment and to provide its benefits to more people. The methodology was developed through the Ville contemporaine of three million inhabitants (1922) and the Radiant City (1930) that Corbusier proposed prior to the Unité d’habitation. This paper therefore compares and analyzes the methodology of the creation of the modern sunshine environment, as it appears in Le Corbusier’s urban planning series, and its residential units as basic urban cells that facilitated the detailed implementation of this method. Finally, based on this analysis, we infer conclusions concerning the direction of the Radiant City’s development and the social significance of the Unité d’habitation.
