Using an analytic framework based on Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal Theory, this study analyzed newspaper editorials on two English education policies promoted by the previous and the current Korean administrations: an absolute grading system for English scores in the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test; and a policy banning English education in public kindergarten and day-care centers. The results showed that the editorials utilized different types of appraisal (i.e., judgment or appreciation) depending on the editor al stance toward the target policies. Also, the analysis indicated that what the editorial writers focused on for appreciation appraisal to support their positions regarding the policies varied considerably depending on the newspaper’s political ideology, conservative or liberal. Another interesting finding is that the traditional relationship between the news media and the public, which is characterized by a unidirectional flow of information and influence, may undergo changes with diverse channels of social media becoming available for the public. Further research is needed to understand better the roles that the news media play in the formation of English education policy.
