Recent criticism offers an alternate reading of laughter in early modern drama, with a particular emphasis on the radical and subversive nature of laughter. Subversive use of laughter can be found in the comedies of early modern England. The comic performances within the comedies are subversive in that they represent a form of disagreement, a pre-institutional form of cultural and political opposition rooted in seeing things from the ‘other’ perspective.” In early modern stage comedies, therefore, “clowns, rogues, fools, jester, and ludicrous commentators . . . these unwashed figures” reveled in the subversion of received authority, in “their moments of improvisation, irony, absurdity, and laughter.” In accordance with the premise that laughter challenges the dominant societal frames of status and decorum and turns them upon their head through exposure and ridicule, this paper examines laughter as it is played out by “outside” figures in Twelfth Night and Volpone as two cases in point.
