The time when student soldiers worked from the outbreak of the Korean War to 1951 April had rapid changes in the fighting line like the aggravation of the war situation and the formation of Nakdong River front, the recapture of Seoul by the Battle of Incheon, March to the north by the Republic of Korea Army and the United Nations Force, Chinese People’s Volunteers Force’s intervention and the January-Fourth Retreat since Korean People’s Army(조선인민군) began to invade the south. Therefore understanding mobilization and activities of the student soldiers for those days can contribute to comprehend the Korean War more widely. With that awareness, this paper looked into how student soldiers of Yosu and Suncheon were organized during the early period of the Korean War. Also this paper investigated that Yi Yeong Gyu Unit advanced to Namwon according to the operation order No. 61 of the Republic of Korea Army Headquarters on July 21 and the student soldiers received the order for moving at night on July 22. This paper also explained Yi Yeong Gyu Unit which had retreated in the aggravated situation of Honam reion received the operation order No. 65 of the Republic of Korea Army Headquarters, which ordered to block the passage between Hadong and Gurye, and the Battle of Hwagaejang took place to carry out that order. At the point, not only the student soldiers participated in the battle. The Battle of Hwagaejang was commanded by lieutenant colonel Yi Yeong Gyu and major Kim Pil Sang. Not only the student soldiers but also the force of Yi Yeong Gyu Unit, which had retreated to Gurye via Namwon and finally converged on Hwagaejang, and the force of police who had retreated from Gurye participated in the battle. It is necessary to escape from ‘Making Myth’ about the student soldiers to evaluate them properly. We need to avoid excessive evaluation based on the narrative structure that 170-180 student soldiers, who had little actual training, fought against around 1,000 of crack Korean People’s Army and saved the Republic of Korea in crisis. We have to pay attention to the historical and local background where the student soldiers of Yosu and Suncheon were organized. After the Korean liberation, serious historical events like conflict between right wing and left wing, establishment of divided countries, Yosun incident and construction of anti-communism system occurred. There was deep conflict between the right and the left in southern part of Jeonnam area. Further studies must be carried out to understand concretely how this historical context and local situation of Jeonnam’s southern part affected organization of the student soldiers.
