In this article, I reveal several characteristics of the explanatory notes of The Tales of Ise, the old notes and the new notes Isemonogatari Koi, concentrating on the primary points and notational issues in the two notes. I analyze how a particular phrase in the seventh volume of The Tales of Ise was interpreted in the two notes and show that there are substantial interpretational differences. During the era of the old notes, when The Tales of Ise was surveyed by poets, the phrase in the seventh volume was interpreted as “the relegation of Narihira” and “the time at which Narihira was exiled,” and the notes about this phrase followed the hypothesis presented in the preceding times. This interpretation was questioned by the new notes, where the scholars of Japanese thought and culture conducted a bibliographic survey of the phrase, which departed from the old notes, which merely followed the preceding hypothesis. This survey was systematic and empirical in the sense that it was based on a bibliographic analysis. The present study thus shows various ways in which The Tales of Ise have been interpreted, by pointing out substantial differences between the old notes and the new notes Isemonogatari Koi.
