Paragraphs are the necessary components of an essay. However, the rhetorical modes of paragraphs have not been fully studied. Taking the perspective of contrastive rhetoric, this paper studies the rhetorical modes of both English and Chinese paragraphs. The results show that both English and Chinese rhetorical modes can be supported by linguistic theories. Moreover, the related studies of English and Chinese paragraphs display that the studies of English paragraphs are far more profound than those of Chinese paragraphs which just stay at the surface level. Finally, the contrastive study of the English and the Chinese writing text-books reveal that the English text-books present detailed instructions and suggestions for how to write topic sentences, to support the topics and to use the rhetorical modes. Contrarily, the Chinese text-books spend much fewer words on how to write paragraphs, for Chinese writing attaches more importance to the over all effect of an essay, thus neglecting the paragraphs.
