The present article analyzes the distributional patterns of teiuka in contemporary Japanese in terms of sentence-initial, sentence-mid, and sentence-final positions. Furthermore, by presenting a comparative analysis based on these three positions, the study attempts to explicate the syntactic properties of teiuka. In syntactic research, one of the most representative rules is word-order; thus, the positioning of a constituent in a sentence is an essential factor in syntactic layering. In connection with this, teiuka is highly frequently used in everyday conversation and it is attested at various positions of an utterance, which makes it possible to explore its meaning in accordance with various positions of a sentence. I concentrate on the position of teiuka in an utterance, and reveals its properties by comparing various instances of teiuka attested in various positions. This analysis also sheds light on the relation between these instances of the expression. The syntactic-layering analysis of teiuka clarifies the overall occurrence patterns of the expression in utterances and its colloquial characteristics.
