In the present study, I analyze doctors’ language strategies used in medical conversations, exploring the ways in which “medical” context manifest in Japanese and Korean. The materials surveyed were extracted from medical TV dramas in the two countries. The result indicates that the utterances in Japanese tend to be designed to convey a medical view compared with those in Korean, from the perspective of information transmission and acceptance. In particular, the utterances in Japanese tend to convey information concerning medical views based on doctors’ professional abilities, even after the patients raised objections. By contrast, after objections are made by patients, the utterances in Korean tend to seek for the patients’ opinions, rather than suggesting or explaining treatments. Further, while consideration to others manifested as a strategy to be considerate of the addressee’s emotion, a sharp contrast was observed between the two languages. In Japanese, the remarkable type of strategy is the one whereby the doctors empathize with the patients, while in Korean, the relevant strategy is the one whereby the doctors objectively comfort their patients as if they existed outside the realm of their patients.
