Hepatocytes which are responsible for the main function of the liver require a large amount of oxygen. The liver is oxygenated by blood flow into the central vein and form a lobule structure that forms oxygen gradients. Therefore, the liver is vulnerable to hypoxic environments such as hypoxemia and low perfusion which can cause hypoxic hepatitis. Hypoxic hepatitis can affect the surrounding environment and affects kidney. According to several studies, patients suffering from hypoxic hepatitis could have been afflicted with seriously suffering chronical kidney disease at a high possibility. Therefore, it is important to develop an in vitro model to study liver and kidney interactions in hypoxic environment.
