Phenanthrenes are representative compounds found in the genus Dioscorea and have many bioactivities. The recent study confirmed that phenanthrenes were present in higher amounts in the peel than the flesh of Dioscorea. Dioscorea is not highly storable, so most of them are peeled and then vacuum-packed or dried and then powdered before distribution. In this process, many peels are produced as a byproduct, discarded because there is no use.
