The purpose of the paper is to analyse the relations between the military expenditure and economic growth in Korea by conducting an empirical investigation of Deger’s simultaneous equation model. The emperical investigation implies that the overall effect of military expenditures on GDP is positive although crowding out effects in national savings exist. In addition, the increase of GDP also induces more defence expenditures. Dividing military expendiures into the biggest 2 chunk(budget ① for the maintenance for troops and military assets, ② for the development and improvement of defense capabilities), budgets for the improvement affect more on GDP than budgets for maintenance do. Trade off effects between military and other governmental budgets are also bigger in the case of improvement.
This shows that recent changes in proportion of military expenditure not only improves war potential but also contributes to national economy.
