This study presents a literary history of Korean U.S. military interpreters who worked for the U.S. military between the 1940s and the 1950s. It covers literary works written both by them and about them. Born between the 1870s and 1930s, the interpreters followed various paths of birth, study, and work between Japan, Hawaii, the United States, China, and Korea. They were migrants, refugees, international students, and returnees, who stood on the front lines of the demise, reconstruction, and division of Japan and Korea. Based on Korea’s subordination not only to Japan but also to the U.S. prior to liberation in 1945, this study identifies Korean interpreters as vital agents in the formation of modern Korean literature. This study, utilizing cross-regional and linguistic analyses, examines writings by and about Korean US military interpreters born between the two empires of Japan and the United States. To demonstrate, literary pieces written by Korean diaspora writers are analyzed- Kim, Gang(1902-?), Kim, S?kp?m(1925-), Ryu, By?k(1920s-?), Richard E. Kim(1932-2009)and Kita Eiichi(1930-). This analytical method interrogates the conventional framework of nation-state oriented modern Korean literature which commonly draws a line between before and after 1945. Based on these conditions, this study provides a different direction in understanding the various forms of ‘Korean literature’, including the widespread penetration across differing regions and languages.
