Chinese classical tragedies are different from the West. Most Chinese classical tragedies concluded with a happy ending. So, it is regarded as having a little tragedy or no real tragedy in ancient China. This paper is not to discuss whether this argument is correct or not, but to find out the reason for the formation with an eye to the phenomenon of happy ending itself. The happy ending of Chinese classical tragedies was deeply rooted in Chinese traditional culture. It was developed in the base of national aesthetic culture, conforming to the traditional aesthetic psychology of Chinese people. It can be said that the happy ending has become the aesthetic reflection of the Chinese nation’s cultural habit, national character and aesthetic concept. It has its unique artistic charm, which enriched the world literature. In this paper, the causes of the happy ending in Chinese classical tragedies are explained from the three aspects. First, the traditional national psychology of optimism. Second, the aesthetic concepts of “Neutralization thought”, The third is Confucian’s ethical ideology of “Good and evil have their own rewards”. It is meaningful for us to analyze these cultural implications of the happy ending in Chinese classical tragedies. Because it would help us to understand the traditional culture of Chinese nation better and evaluate the value system of Eastern and Western literature objectively and rationally.
