It has been revealed by previous studies that there is a part that directly quotes the original text of Romance of the Three Kingdoms and related Chinese poems in Yi Sunsin’s War Diary. This paper aims to scholarly examine the more direct motives in which these two important documents are cited and recorded, and interpret the meaning and significance of these two documents in the inner understanding of Yi Sunsin in a more elaborate and coherent way of literary criticism. Chapter 2 explores the motive when the original text of Three Kingdoms was cited in War Diary and reveals its meaning. Through this, not the diary of July 1, 1595 in which the same phrase was used, but the diary of September 3, 1594, which recorded the unfair feelings after receiving the secret message of the king who criticized Yi Sunsin and ordered an unreasonable attack. Proving that it was the most direct motive of Yi Sunsin’s phrase quotation, it was revealed that his quotation of Three Kingdoms was due to the consistency of the content with his ultimate strategy for fighting the war, which he maintained despite the pressure of rivals and the king at the time. Chapter 3 explores the motive when the chinese poems mentioning Zhuge Liang in War Diary were recorded and reveals the meaning. Through this, it was revealed that the motive when the chinese poems mentioning Zhuge Liang was recorded is no other than that of the king, which he had copied in 1593, and that the Yi Sunsin’s chinese poems was written in order to actively respond to the king’s appeal, hoping that his servants would exert themselves and overcome the national crisis. In conclusion, it was revealed that Yi Sunsin’s lover of Three Kingdoms was none other than because he chose Zhuge Liang, the hero of the rescue in the novel, as a role model for himself.
