Rotenone is a natural compound derived from plants of the genera Derris and Lonchocarpus, which has been widely used in establishment of dopaminergic neuron loss and/or death model in Parkinson‘s disease (PD). Zebrafish (Danio rerio), as a vertebrate model system, offers unique advantages allowing it to be used in the research of developmental toxicology and neurodegenerative diseases. This study aims to assess the toxicity of varying concentrations of rotenone to different developmental stages of zebrafish embryos. Through the embryotoxicity tests, we found that treatment of rotenone (7.5, 15, 30 nM) to 7-9hour post fertilization (hpf) embryos caused development retardation and blood accumulation in yolk sac.
