Securing high-quality fertilized eggs is one of the most important factors in fish seed production. However, in the case of the yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata), the duration of spawning-capable maturity is short, and the survival rate of early hatchers varies considerably depending on the quality of spawned eggs. For evaluation of egg quality, the biochemical composition (amino acids and fatty acids) of fertilized eggs is used as an important indicator, with higher contents of amino acids and fatty acids (used for tissue development and as energy sources) during the egg development stage being considered to signify better egg quality. In addition, amino acids are the main energy source during egg development and also function as osmotic compounds that control oocyte development during the final stages of maturation. In this study, we performed trace analysis to compare the fatty acid and amino acid contents of fertilized eggs produced in an artificially controlled environment (photoperiod and water temperature) with those produced under natural environmental conditions.
We found that the amino acid content of the fertilized eggs obtained from fish undergoing their first spawning event (first spawning) was 236.33 µg/mg, which was higher than the contents of 209.16 µg/mg and 211 µg/mg in the fertilized eggs obtained from experimental fish that had previous spawning experience (including those induced under natural conditions).
