Giyeonghoe (耆英會) and girohoe (耆老會), both loosely translated in English as a gathering of elders, refer to state events held under the Joseon Dynasty policy of making special provisions for officials aged over seventy. Prior to the Japanese Invasions of Korea (1592–1598), giyeonghoe were private gatherings where current and former high-ranking officials around the age of seventy enjoyed drinking and dancing or discussed state affairs. Girohoe were administered by the Giroso (耆老所, Hall of Senior Officials) and were attended by former civil officials over the age of seventy. However, giyeonghoe were abolished after the Japanese Invasions of Korea. Currently-serving civil officials holding the second or higher senior rank over seventy attended girohoe from after the Japanese Invasions of Korea through the Korean Empire period.
There are currently five surviving examples the commemorative painting of giyeonghoe during the reign of King Seonjo that depict the giyeonghoe held in the early autumn of 1585. They include the gelatin dry-plate photograph version at the National Museum of Korea, a hanging scroll that entered the collection of the National Museum of Korea in September 1945, a hanging scroll donated to the National Museum of Korea by Yi Hong-geun (sobriquet: Dongwon) in 1980, the version from the painting album of giyeonghoe during the reign of King Seonjo at the Seoul National University Museum, and a hanging scroll at the Bongsan Seowon Confucian Academy. Although all of these works illustrate the giyeonghoe held in 1585, their production dates differ since they are copies made by later generations after the original painting was damaged. A comparative analysis of these works has revealed that the painting in the gelatin dryplate photograph is identical to the hanging scroll that entered the collection of the National Museum of Korea in September 1945. Therefore, the latter is believed to be the earliest copy among the surviving examples modeled after the original painting. The other three examples are presumed to have been produced in the order of the Seoul National University Museum version, the Dongwon version, and the Bongsan Seowon version.
