(E)-2-hexenal is a reactive electrophilic species released by green plant upon herbivory or pathogen infection and known to induce various plant defense responses. We used (E)-2-hexenal as a natural alternative of chemical germicides to prevent pathogen infection of kiwifruit ‘Haegeum’ after harvest, and performed integrated transcriptomic-metabolomic analyses to investigate the effects of (E)-2-hexenal on the induction of defense responses in kiwifruit. We observed the necrotic lesion by Botrytis cinerea (B. cinrea) was significantly reduced in (E)-2-hexenal treated kiwifruit. To elucidate the mechanism underlying (E)-2-hexenal- induced resistance of kiwifruit, transcriptome and metabolome of kiwifruit treated with (E)-2-hexenal for 3 hours (3H), 24 hours (24H), and 24 hours, and inoculated with B. cinerea (B) were comparatively analyzed with their corresponding controls.
