Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze disabled baseball players’ situational conflicts and their reactions based on grounded theory, to suggest the process of adaptation and maturation as an example of substance theory.
Method: For this purpose, the author selected the participation criteria. Based on the criteria, the author used the snowball sampling method to secure six study participants who were introduced as team members of the Namyangju Disabled Baseball Team currently participating as disabled baseball players. The data were analyzed by the open coding, axial coding, and selective coding process suggested by Strauss and Corbin(1990).
Results: The results are as follows. First, there were 242 concepts, 28 subcategories, and 12 categories from the open coding stage. Second, as a result of axial coding, a paradigm model for the Adaptation and Maturation process of Disabled Baseball Players in the Sports Environment was formed. Third, from the selective coding stage, it was possible to identify the core category of overcoming conflict and maturing that embraces all the categories, which was shown by describing the central phenomenon and the correlations among each category of the study as a descriptive story. Furthermore, through the process of standardization of the hypotheses in the core category, it was possible to identify two types of adaptation: the active coping type and the conformity type.
Conclusion: The understanding that came from the process and the results of this study can provide a more positive reaction and a better maturation method for both the individuals and the group in sports environments similar to baseball for the disabled, which is the background of this study.
