This study concentrates on three subjects to investigate correlations between disease and hatred in Cho Myung Ik’s Spring and New Road. First, this study tries to verify that the space was enforced as the sign for Civilization Clash. The Well is the space to collide with mountain village and New Road. The concept of New Road has the signified to present the new disease.
Second, this study tries to investigate the Exchange Imagination of Eastern and Western metonymy. Eastern animals and Western plant have connections with disease. An American Acacia was described as being a wrong set of values that was Imperialism and Capitalism. On the contrary, A Korean Cow was harmonized naturally in the semantic network of nature, and absorbed aggressively into the positive meaning of right.
Third, Femininity encompassing Venereal disease was narrated as Hatred for Others, The driver of car was not punished but female character was doomed to die with Venereal disease. A woman only had to take responsibility with internal desire. The infectious disease in Korean modern culture will be the door that revivifies the problems of modernism. Diverging from an absolute viewpoint of ruling diseases, this study takes note of the new geography of modern culture, where an occurrence of disease resulted in civilization clash was the meaning of new culture.

본 연구는 근대 작가 최명익의 질병 상상력을 혐오와 관련시켜 살피는 고찰이라고 할 수 있다. 최명익은 동물성과 식물성을 활용해 작품 안에서 다양한 질병에 대한 은유를 보여준다. 결핵을 주제로 한 〈무성격자, 1937〉와 〈폐어인, 1938〉을 위시해서 상동병을 그리는 〈장삼이사, 1947〉가 있고, 마약 중독을 보여주는 〈심문, 1939〉, 각기병과 장티푸스를 다루는 〈비오는 길, 1936〉 등이 있다. 본고에서는 최명익의 〈봄과 신작로, 1939〉를 대상으로 타자 혐오와 질병 담론을 읽었다. 이를 통해 근대 식민지 조선에서 외국과 이방인의 문화를 어떻게 제국주의 담론과 연결시켜 묘사하는지 살펴볼 수 있었다. 그간 이 작품은 최명익의 다른 작품에 비해 크게 부각되지 못했다.
최명익의 〈봄과 신작로, 1939〉를 이해하기 위한 키워드는 공간, 시간, 질병, 죽음, 여성 등으로 압축해서 정리할 수 있다. 본고는 1930년대 한국을 대표하는 질병 소설로 보편적 독서가 가능한 작품으로 〈봄과 신작로, 1939〉를 뽑고자 했다. 가장 한국적이면서도 보편적인 혐오와 질병의 담론을 자연스럽게 펼쳐 보이고 있으며, 문학적 상징과 은유가 잘 구현되고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구는 이 작품을 세 가지 지점에서 논의하고자 했다. 첫째, 전통공간과 산업공간의 문화 충돌 상상력을 읽어보았다. 우물이라는 공간에서 산골 마을과 신작로가 어떻게 이분화되어 충돌하는지 살펴 보았다. 둘째, 동양과 서양의 환유적 교환상상력을 살펴보았다. 이 작품에서 활용되고 있는 송아지, 고양이, 말, 닭 등 동물 상상력이 어떻게 한국적으로 그려지고 있으며 외래종인 식물성 아카시아가 어떻게 묘사되는지 살펴보았다. 셋째, 주인공 금녀가 성병을 앓고 죽어가는 과정에서 외국인 혐오증이 서술되는 방식과 제국주의와 연관시켜 조선이 그려지는 방식을 살펴볼 것이다. 성병이 전파자인 운전수와는 아무런 관련이 없는 오직 여성인 금녀에게만 치명적임을 보여줌으로써 최명익이 그리는 여성이 신체로 젠더화되는 작용을 읽어보았다. 이를 통해 타자 혐오와 질병이 어떻게 한국 근대 문학 속에서 상징화되는지 정치하게 살펴보았다.
