The basic principles of Goryeo’s royal ancestral shrine system were settled during the rule of King Seongjong. According to the principles, the shrine was filled up with the spirit tablets of the kings who actually ruled Goryeo, and those who ascended the throne not behind their fathers but behind their brothers were arranged on the same line with the previous kings. Until then, Goryeo’s royal ancestral shrine was not systematized for quite a time.
The reason for this phenomenon was that the royal ancestral shrine’s system became unstable in the last period of Silla after Park’s royal family appeared. To illustrate, the shrine space was not mainly filled with the spirit tablets of direct descendants. In other words, because the management of Silla’s royal ancestral shrine did not stick to strict rules, there were hardships in organizing the royal ancestral shrine’s system in the early period of Goryeo.
