This paper aims to demonstrate how the ‘justice and righteousness’ of the Old and the New Testament play a role in God’s political ideology. In the Old Testament, justice and righteousness occur in Genesis 18:17-19 where they are referred to as being both God’s purpose in choosing Abraham and an obligation Abraham and his descendants must keep. In Torah, especially in Deuteronomy, justice and righteousness are proclaimed by Moses as the law to obey. In the period of the Davidic dynasty, there were strong political tensions on the issues of justice and righteousness between the prophets and groups in power such as kings, priests, and nobles. The prophets urged political actors to implement justice and righteousness on behalf of God. Against Assyrian and Babylonian threats, political actors in Israel and Judah tried to solve matters through military and diplomatic means, whereas the prophets proclaimed justice and righteousness for the poor and weak people in society. The fulfillment of justice and righteousness as God’s political ideology was the criterion for judgment and salvation.
In the New Testament, Jesus proclaimed ‘righteousness’ as a key element of the Kingdom of God especially in the gospel of Matthew, where Jesus’ ministry is declared as the fulfillment of God’s righteousness (Matt 3:15). Jesus asked his people to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” (Matt 6:33a). Jesus suggests righteousness as a criterion for entrance into the kingdom of heaven (Matt 5:20). Among the eight beatitudes of the sermon on the mount, two beatitudes are concerned with righteousness (Matt 5:6, 10). Paul interpreted Jesus as God’s new righteousness as testified to by the Law and the Prophets (Rom 3:21). Paul portrayed Jesus as the manifestation of God’s righteousness for the condemned sinners.
In the 21st century, the positive influence of the Korean Church on society has been declining rapidly especially among youths. This is proof that the Korean Church failed to earn public trust and respect as a result of immoral behaviors such as sexual scandals and hereditary pastorship. In the contemporary COVID-19 pandemic, Korean Churches have been blamed for the im-proper handling of the crisis. By insisting on the controversial right to meet including in worship services, despite its unlawfulness, churches became hot-beds of the pandemic. This paper maintains that justice and righteousness as God’s political ideologies should be emphasized as the crucial message for the restoration of the Korean Church in the pandemic period.
