This study examines the function of “Qilai4”, a direction complement, which is normally described as a discourse marker or idiom. Such a description of “Qilai4” is considered problematic since it cannot be used as a discourse marker or idiom. Rather, understanding it as an ending marker or evidential modality marker was suggested in this paper as a more appropriate way of understanding the function of the complement.
Ending markers are the structural, formal, or semantic end point used to complete the sentence, and marks one complete event. The ending marker is required for a proposition to become a full sentence. The ending marker is not only used to mark the transition between sentences, but is also an important factor for revealing the meaning or intention of the speaker. Therefore, “Qilai4” is not a simple idiomatic phrase or discourse marker, rather it is an important element used to form a sentence.
“Qilai4” is also used when the speaker wishes to express a subjective opinion to provide the basis for a judgment or through direct and indirect information, which is then used to convey the proposition.
As this is one of the functions of an evidential modality marker, the speaker expresses how he/she has obtained the information, or in other words, it is a grammatical way to express an information source.
However, “Qilai4” can also change in importance or require deletion depending on its placement in the sentence. In such cases, “Qilai4” is itself used to explain a purpose. Such usage was not covered in this study, and would need to be explored in future studies.
