In this treatise, I examined how the Battle of Okinawa was portrayed in postwar Japanese films. The Battle of Okinawa, which was the only ground battle taking place within Japan’s original territory during the Asia-Pacific War, symbolizes a miserable end of the war just as the bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki do. It is considered as a unusual battle because of the abnormally high civilian casualties. This led to a wide gap in war memories between the Japanese soldiers and native Okinawan residents. These memories of the Okinawa battle have been recorded and reproduced in postwar Japanese films time and again over an extended period. In this process, the battle of Okinawa was recognized by Japan/Japanese as a tragic memory of war, which provided an important opportunity to form a national identity oriented toward anti-war and peace. As much, the cinematic representation of the Battle of Okinawa has had a great influence on building a Japanese’s view of war and peace. Unfortunately there have been few studies on the cinematic representation of the battle. This study looks into how the battle of Okinawa was narrated and depicted in postwar Japanese films. In particular, focusing on the stereotype of victimhood in those films, I reviewed how Japanese’ self-perception as war victims had been represented and inherited in each era and with the social atmospheres in mind, considering the characteristics of motion picture as a medium. This study could serve as a case study grasping undefined Japanese memories of the Asia-Pacific war.
