This study analyzes and examines the aspects of sexual harassment against women in Korean and Japanese proverbs. In particular, metaphorical materials were the main subject of this analysis.
The findings of this study are as follows:
First of all, both Korean and Japanese proverbs make frequent use of sexual harassment against women with a variety of subjects. Particularly in Korean proverbs, the subject matters are diverse and sexual harassment using slangs are frequently identified.
Also, the object of sexual harassment usually varies widely, including young women and old women, wives and concubines, widows and prostitutes. Among them, young woman are the most seriously and frequently targeted. Other key findings are as follows:
The sexual harassment pattern in Korean proverbs emphasizes women"s passion and dependence, and there are many things that are described as very explicit and vulgar. The characteristic is based on the social and cultual background of Korea, where Confucianism, which features the idea of male dominance over women, was established as a nationally approved ideology.
Meanwhile, Japanese proverbs emphasize youth and tradability of women. These characteristics are thought to be influenced by Japan"s unique prostitution culture, which has developed into an established commerce.
