In this paper, I intend to interpret the great politics of F. Nietzsche from the perspective of the cosmopolitan virtue of good European. Confronting German nationalism, Nietzsche claims himself as a good european. Nietzsche presents great politics as a new political ideal through revaluation of all values. Great politics, which is a new value, will enter into a fierce struggle with existing nihilist values (nationalism, democracy, etc.), and it is great politics to present the ideological horizon of such a new power struggle. Therefore, I attempts to clarify the characteristics of the great politics as opposing ideals by comparing the ideals of modern politics that Nietzsche sought to overcome with great politics. And I want to clarify the relationship between great politics and the cosmopolitan virtue of the new ruler, the good european.
Great politics opens the horizon of critical thinking for us in the face of political problems of democracy, far-right nationalism, and religious fundamentalism. Nietzsche"s critics of nationalism and modern politics, his love for overman, and his discourse on good european present a new political horizon in the era of globalization and environmental crisis, where cosmopolitan virtues are increasingly required. However, the solipsistic limitations of Nietzsche"s theory of sovereignty must be supplemented and developed by the social contractual sovereignty theory from the viewpoints of the rule of law, of the European Union, and of the world state.
This paper is organized as follows. In chapter 2; ‘great politics and value transfer’, I describe the relationship between values, value transfer and great politics in Nietzsche"s philosophy. It also analyzes the core of Nietzsche"s critique of freedom, equality and fraternity from the perspective of great politics. Chapter 3; ‘criticism of nationalism’ is Nietzsche"s critique of nationalism as opposed to great politics. Chapter 4; ‘the characteristics of great politics and the cosmopolitan virtues of good european’, is a political vision that describes the relationship between the great politics and the cosmopolitan virtues of good european. Chapter 5, ‘conclusion: modern significance and limitations of great politics’, is about the meaning of great politics in critically thinking about modern politics, and the limitations of great politics.
