The purpose of this study was to identify the problems associated with grasping the current status of school cheerleading and to suggest the direction of development. Mixed study with quantitative and qualitative research method was conducted. For the quantitative study, convenient sampling was conducted. 479 copies out of 550 questionnaires were analyzed which was distributed to the students participating in cheerleading by using SPSS Ver. 25.0. As for the qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with expert leaders and triangular verification analysis was conducted.
According to the grasping of the current status, there were differences in both the school team and the All-Star team by region. Except Seoul and Gyeonggi province, cheerleading participants were increasing in other big cities including Jeju province. In the case of Gangwon province, the all-star team, elementary, middle, and high school participants were increasing. As for the status of leaders, it was found that there were very few professional leaders. In the league game, it was found that the participation rate of large cities around Seoul was high. Similarly, participation rate of Gangwon-do was increasing among rural region. As a result of frequency analysis and cross-analysis of demographic characteristics, to participate in competitions and performances were the highest in all five purpose of participation. Besides, physical fitness and to join cheerleading sports club were also high. Satisfaction was high in all five groups and teaching of the instructors was the highest reason of satisfaction. The environmental problems at the school indicated by the instructors interviews were lack of: safety facilities, awareness about cheerleading, budget support, frequency of participation, and instructor competency. As for the direction of development, safety facilities, budget support, improvement of teacher awareness, and classes by level were suggested in the school system. It also suggested that nation should recognize cheerleading as a professional sport by providing support. Besides, improvement of leadership capabilities, social media promotion, and teacher training should be promoted.
