Storytelling is an important method of oral communication and has two distinct features. Firstly, it should be noted that approximately 75 percent of the Bible are stories. Secondly, most of our target audience for the gospel truth is the people in oral culture. 75% out of the whole un-reached people group are oral people. They are most likely to feel at ease around messages spoken to them as they come from a background of strong orality. And nowadays, the oral communication becomes more and more important and effective tool even for the literate people.
We can use “the storytelling” in five areas of our ministry for the oral people, more than 70% of oral oriented people in the whole world including most of Muslim people, even though it is needless to say that the method is very necessary for the frontier mission. Firstly, it can be used as an effective tool in evangelism. Secondly, it can be used as a good way to assist Bible study classes or discipleship courses. Thirdly, it can be used for teaching kids in Sunday school. Fourthly, it can be used for good theological education. Fifthly, it can be used for preaching.
For the frontier mission, we need three strategies. Firstly, we should have “the incarnation mission strategy – identification principle.” Secondly, we need “the receptor oriented principle.” Thirdly, we must use “the oral strategy, storytelling.”
