This study explores the compatibility of density and safety in cities, particularly considering the current global wave of COVID-19. Density, a central theme in contemporary spatial or urban planning, has prevailed in the academic and practical fields, with the issue of compact cities. Upon a brief literature review, the tale of Daegu and New York, the two hardest hit cities in South Korea and the U.S., respectively, is briefly examined, focusing on their responses to the 2020 pandemic. This article, largely based on current academic discussion, government materials, interviews, and press reports, suggests what might happen in future cities and the planning field. A significant paradigm shift is expected to occur in hardware structures such as urban land use, housing, public transportation, and green spaces. Software changes would embrace planning-public health integration, homeostasis risks, and smart city management. Additionally, several implications shall be drawn, based on Korea’s national balanced-development strategy.
