Universities worldwide are promoting their vision for digital transformation to brace for the post-coronavirus era. Against the backdrop, this study (n=22) is aimed at investigating students’ perceptions towards integrating synchronous videoconferencing sessions into an asynchronous online English class at university. Two research questions were established as follows: 1) is there a positive change in students’ perceptions towards a hybrid course with a mixture of online modalities (asynchronous and synchronous)? Second, what aspects of synchronous communications help to improve students’ perceptions towards the hybrid course? A student survey questionnaire was conducted twice in Weeks 6 and 15. In addition, open-ended questions were analyzed to check themes related to changes in students’ perceptions. Non-parametric test alternative to paired samples t-test was conducted for the statistical analysis. The study revealed a significant change in student perception over time. Students found synchronous online sessions easier and facilitative to communicate with peers and teacher, which resulted in active participation in group activities, a better understanding of class content, and higher satisfaction with the class. Pedagogical implications were provided to maximize students’ learning online.
